Baseball, 2012-04-15

(Green Tree, PA) Point Park University (36-7, 8-0) took control of the American Mideast Conference race with a four-game weekend sweep of the Cavs (22-20, 7-5).  After taking two from the Cavs on Friday at Walsh, Point Park rallied to win game one 5-4 and defeated the Cavs 6-2 in the nightcap.

Point Park scored a single run in the first inning and two in the second to take the early lead in the opener.  Walsh finally erupted with four runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead.  Forrest Boggs (Jr., Suffield, OH/Field/Mercyhurst) and Tyler Jones (Sr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) opened the seventh with singles.  Jordan Shank (Fr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) ran for Boggs.  With one out, John Stephenson (So., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) singled home Boggs for the Cavs first run of the game.  R. J. Vukovich (Jr., North Canton, OH/HS) then singled to left field to score Shank and cut the Point Park lead to 3-2.  Walsh scored twice on an error and took a 4-3 lead to the bottom of the seventh.  Point Park would then answer with a rally of their own off of Walsh’s Zack Speer (Jr., Stow, OH/HS) in the home half of the inning.  The Pioneers opened the inning with back-to-to back singles and won the game on a two-run triple from Don McDuffee.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers snapped a scoreless tie with a two runs in the fourth inning off of Walsh starter Billy Gura (Sr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel). They would add a single run in the fifth and put the game away with three runs in the sixth.

Walsh is home on Tuesday for a non-conference double header with Shawnee State University at 1 pm.
