4.15.12 SOFTBALL: Cavs Split With Carlow
Walsh split an American Mideast Conference doubleheader with visiting Carlow by winning the first game 8-1 and falling 1-0 in the second game. The Cavaliers (28-14, 10-2) travel to Pittsburgh for an important twin bill with Point Park at 3 p.m. The Celtics (26-9, 8-4) currently sit in third in the AMC.
Every batter for Walsh recorded at least one hit. Six of the nine had multiple hits. The Cavs opened up the game by scoring a run in the first inning, followed that up with four runs in the fourth, and added three insurance in the fifth.
Calee Ruppel (Fr., Mogadore, OH/HS) broke the game open with a two-RBI single to right-center in the fourth inning to make it 4-0. Dana Brown (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) also belted in two runs on a double to left field in the following inning that made the score 7-1. Brown later scored on a single by Kayla Marcus (So., Bergholz, OH/Edison) for the game’s final run.
Erin Ebert (Jr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) earned the win with an impressive performance that saw her strike out 11. She gave up one run, unearned, on two hits with two walks in seven innings of work. Ruppel finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Brown was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
In the second game, Walsh lost a tough one as Carlow scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning. The battery for both teams were strong as each side only had three hits. Kelsey Ford (Sr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss to fall to 10-4.
