4.17.13 BASEBALL: Cavs Drop Pair at Lake Erie

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) Walsh (16-13, 10-9) dropped both ends of a GLIAC doubleheader at Lake Erie College (11-22, 8-12) today by the scores of 4-0 and 3-2 in nine innings. The Cavs return home on Saturday, when they open a three-game GLIAC series with Saginaw Valley State University.  The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm and a single game at 1:30 pm on Sunday.

Walsh lost the opener 4-0. Lake Erie scored single runs in the second and sixth innings, and put a two-spot on the board in the fourth. Walsh managed just two hits and committed three errors. Brandon Whitslar (So., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) went the distance and was charged with the loss, falling to 3-2. Walsh came to life and loaded the bases in the seventh, but failed to score.

Lake Erie scored single runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Walsh rallied and tied game at 2-2 in top of the fifth on Andy DePeel’s (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) two-run single to center.  Lake Erie pushed across the winning run in the ninth on a two-out single to left. The run was unearned.  David Roper (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) started and worked seven strong innings, allowing only two run on seven hits with four strikeouts. Neal Edwards (So., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) worked the final 2.2 innings and was tagged with the loss (0-1).  The Cavs tallied just seven hits in the doubleheader.
