4.19.13 FOOTBALL: Defense Shines in Spring Game
In the first spring game under new head coach Ted Karras Jr., the defense shined with 58-34 win over the offense before a packed crowd at Vasco Field. The game used a different scoring system in which the offense could score points under the traditional way with touchdowns, extra points and field goals. One point was also awarded for each first down. For the defense, six points were scored for a touchdown, one point for an extra point, one point for a three-and-out, three points for a four-and-out, three points for a turnover, and two points for a sack.
The defense struck first during the offense’s first set of plays starting at its own five yard line as defensive back Kyle Vaclav (Sr., 5-11, Canfield, OH/HS) picked off Kevin Besser (R-Fr., 6-4, Tallmadge, OH/St. Vincent-St.Mary) at the 4-yard line and walked into the end zone. Lineman Eric Price (R-Fr., 6-1, Galena, OH/Olentangy) and defensive back Jamaris Brown (Jr., 5-9, Fort Meyers, FL/Lehigh) also added interceptions to raise the defense’s score.
The offense eventually clicked late in the exhibition and scored through the air for three touchdowns. Cody Minor (R-Fr., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Perry) connected with Danny Reed (Jr., 5-10, Hartville, OH/Lake) for the first score. Matt Shelton (Jr., 6-3, Youngstown, OH/Hubbard) and Trent Toy (Jr., 6-3, Avon Lake, OH/HS) both found Anthony Schrock (Jr., 6-3, Wadsworth, OH/HS/Akron) for a pair of scores as well. All three touchdown passes were from the 20-yard line. Those two receptions were Schrock’s only catches of the night.
Just as the offense was close to making a comeback, Jordan Gaines (R-Fr., 6-0, Pickerington, OH/Pickerington Central) jumped in front of a pass at the 4-yard line and raced 96 yards to the house to put the game out of reach.
Special teams also showed some spark as Pat White (Jr., 5-11, Cambridge, OH/Pickerington Central) returned a kickoff 91 yards to pay dirt, but the touchdown did not factor into the scoring for offense or defense.
Minor finished the night with three completions on six attempts for 92 yards and a touchdown to lead the quartet of quarterbacks. Aaron Male (R-Fr., 5-11, Akron, OH/Ellet) led the ground game with 14 carries for 46 yards. Justin Keith (Jr., 6-2, Canton, OH/South) added 10 carries for 37 yards. Ryan Christiansen (Jr., 6-2, Hartville, OH/Lake) had two receptions for a total of 47 yards.
The Cavaliers will kick off the fall season at home against Edinboro of the PSAC. The non-conference game is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.
