4.19.14SOFTBALL: Cavs Lose Pair of Nailbiters to Findlay
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The last two home games of the regular season didn’t go in favor of Walsh as it lost to Findlay by scores of 1-0 and 4-3 in nine innings in an afternoon doubleheader. The Cavaliers are now 25-16 overall and 13-9 in the conference. The Oilers improve to 18-13 overall and 10-10 in the GLIAC.
Findlay picked up the opening game’s only run when Emily Reynolds scored Jackie Messersmith on a single to left field. Messersmith originally reached based after she was hit by a pitch.
The second game provided more excitement despite the Cavs coming up on the short end of the 4-3 decision. Findlay again scored the first run of the game with a score in the second, but Walsh responded with a three-run frame in the fourth.
The Cavs took advantage of a pair of errors to start the inning as Reagan Rito (Fr., Beloit, OH/West Branch) and Eryn Simon (Sr., Oregon, OH/Clay) reached on Oiler miscues. Both players eventually scored after a single Marissa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS) and a fielder’s choice by Presley Destro (Jr., Mogadore, OH/HS/Catawba). Riley Kiesling (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover/Findlay) added the other run after she pinch ran for Destro and was brough home on a sacrifice bunt by Anna Fach (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/John Carroll).
Findlay answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 3-3. The score stayed the same until the ninth when consecutive hits to the outfield allowed Findlay to score a walk-off win.
Rohr took the loss in both games despite a strong effort in both games. She went the complete game in the opener and allowed just one run on three hits. She pitched 5.1 innings in relief in game two. She struck out a combined six batters on the day.
Walsh now hits the road for its final two doubleheaders of the regular season. First up is a trip to Lyndhurst to take on Notre Dame College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
