4.20.13 BASEBALL: Cavs Split with Saginaw Valley; Second Game Slips Away

Baseball, 2013-04-20

(North Canton, OH) Walsh (17-14, 11-10) split a GLIAC doubleheader with Saginaw Valley State University (11-17, 9-9) today. The Cavs won the opener 4-2, but let game two slip away losing 13-10. The Cavs and the Cardinals play the rubber game of the three-game series at Walsh tomorrow at 1:30 pm.

Walsh jumped to a 3-0 lead, and held on for a 4-2 win in the opener. Jeff Kotlar (Sr., Euclid, OH/HS) pitched six strong innings to improve to 3-1.  Zach Speer (St., Stow, OH/HS) worked a scoreless seventh inning to record his first save of the year. Walsh scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead and then added two more runs in the third. Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) singled with one out, and then came home on Andrew Bonnette's (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) first homerun of the season, a two-run shot to left. Bonnette had two of Walsh's six hits. After the Cardinals trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning, Walsh added an insurance run on a Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS) single in the home half of the sixth inning.

Game two was the tale of two innings. Saginaw led 6-1 heading into bottom of the sixth inning when the Cavs exploded for nine runs to take a 10-6 lead. After Justin Clements (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) doubled to left-center to open the inning, the Cavs strung singles together by John Stephenson (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS), Link, and Trevor Smith (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) to cut the Cardinals lead to 6-4. Bonnette walked with the bases loaded to pull the Cavs to within a run and Steve Wido (Sr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) was hit by a pitch with the bases full to tie the game. Walsh then took the lead, at 8-6, on Clements two-run single to left. Walsh added their ninth run on a Tim Stinson (Sr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) double and their final run on an error.

In the top of the seventh, SVSU took advantage of three Walsh errors, and a three-run homer to left from Kyle O’Boyle to erase the deficit with a seven-run inning on the way to a 13-10 triumph. Neal Edwards (So., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) took the loss in relief.

Steve Wido homered for the Cavs in the second inning, his second of the year.
