Baseball, 2012-04-22

(Avon, OH) Despite scoring just one run in 14 innings, Walsh (24-22) split a doubleheader with Notre Dame College (14-25-1) at All Pro Freight Stadium today. Walsh took the opener 1-0, but fell 6-0 in the nightcap.

Left-hander Travis Danner (Jr., Medina, OH/Highland/CCC) tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener to improve to 6-1.  Danner was nearly perfect, facing just 22 batters.  He fanned eight and did not walk a batter, while retiring the last 16.  He allowed singles in the first and second innings.  Walsh snapped the scoreless tie when Drew Link (So., Granville, OH/HS) drew a one-out walk in the sixth, stole second, and came home on a two-out single by Tim Stinson (Sr., Alliance, OH/Marlington).

Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap and made the lead stand-up until they put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth.  Walsh starter Billy Gura (Sr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) lasted 3.1 innings and was charged with all six runs.  He falls to 6-4 on the season.  Joe Tann (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) finished up.  The Cavs mustered just two hits against Notre Dame starter, and winner, Andrew Hyde.
