4.25.13 BASEBALL: ODU Pitching Stymies Cavs in Double GLIAC Loss

(North Canton, OH) Walsh (18-16, 12-12) was held to one run and five hits combined, in losing both games to Ohio Dominican University (18-23, 13-13) by the scores of 2-1 and 6-0 in GLIAC action. The losses drop the Cavs to 12-12 in the GLIAC, while raising the Panthers to 13-13 in league play. The Cavs play a single GLIAC game at Tiffin University tomorrow (3 pm) and a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 pm.

Walsh dropped game one after giving up a pair of runs in the opening frame. The Panthers’ leadoff batter Marcus Schluessler scored from second on a single by Kyle Tisdale for the first run. Tisdale later scored on a double to left field by Anthony Raschilla. Ohio Dominican was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The Cavs looked to get back into the game in the bottom of the fourth. Trevor Smith (Sr., 5-10, Parma, OH/Holy Name) scored on single to left by Justin Clements (Jr., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson) to cut the deficit to one. Smith opened up the inning with a walk. Following a pair of fly outs, John Stephenson (Jr., 6-4, New Philadelphia, OH/HS) moved Smith to third base hit to right field. It was as close as Walsh would get as they left a pair of runners on base in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Jeff Kotlar (Sr., 6-2, Euclid, OH/HS) took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. He gave up a pair of runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Ohio Dominican took advantage of three walks in the third inning of the nightcap, scoring four times in the inning in a 6-0 shutout win. They would add two runs in the sixth. ODU outhit the Cavs 10-2. Ian Drapcho (Jr. Dover, OH/HS) was chased in the four-run third inning and suffers his first loss of the season (3-1).

ODU’s Alex Borgan went the distance to earn his first win (1-0) of the season. He fanned seven.
