Softball, 2013-04-26

Walsh ended the season on a high note with a sweep of visiting Lake Erie by scores of 9-1 and 10-0 in GLIAC action. The Cavaliers end their season 18-20 overall and 8-16 in the conference. The Storm currently stands at 2-32 overall and 0-25 in the GLIAC with doubleheaders the next two days.

The Cavs struck first when Marissa Bondoni (Fr., Alliance, OH/HS) hit in Eryn Simon (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second. Simon reached safely on a double to right center to start the frame. Lake Erie answered the run in the top of the fourth the aid of a pair of Walsh errors. Simon put Walsh up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth after she reached on an error and scored on a single by Fallon Gawry (Fr., Chardon, OH/HS).

Walsh then blew the game open in the fifth inning with seven runs to end it via mercy rule. The frame was highlighted by a two-RBI double to right-center by Crystal Pfleger (Sr., Mogadore, OH/Field) and a two-RBI triple by Calee Ruppel (So., Mogadore, OH/HS). Ruppel later crossed the plate for the game-ending run.

Erin Ebert (Sr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) tossed a gem in her final appearance in the circle for the Cavaliers. She allowed one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Ebert ends the season 8-8.

Simon continued her impressive day with a two-run home run just inside foul pole down the third base line. The round trip also scored Kayla Marcus (Jr., Bergholz, OH/Edison), who reached on an infield slap single. Ruppel and Dana Brown (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) provided RBI hits in the top of the second to score Bondoni and Anna Fach (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/John Carroll) for a 4-0 lead. The Cavs then emulated the first game with five runs in the top of the third inning for a 9-0 lead.

Bondoni pitched a fantastic game in the nightcap. She carried a perfect game into the fourth inning and no-hitter into the fifth. She completed the one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.
