4.27.13 MEN'S LACROSSE: Seniors Go Out in Style With OT Win vs. A-B
Men's Lacrosse, 2013-04-27
A better script couldn’t have been written for what played out for Senior Day in Walsh’s 12-11 overtime victory as all three seniors heavily affected the outcome of the game. Cody Stoll (Sr., 5-6, Jackson, OH/HS) scored a goal and three assists, Jason Lockwood (Sr., 6-4, Powell, OH/Olentangy) came up with 20 saves on 51 shots faced, and Tyler Murphy (Sr., 6-4, Canton, OH/Jackson) provided the game-winning goal in the extra period and gave the Cavaliers (3-7, 1-6) an thrilling finish to the season.
On top of that, it was a close game throughout the contest as neither team took a lead larger than three. There were six game-tying goals and three lead-changes. The Battlers (0-13, 0-7) lived up to their nickname and scored a goal with four seconds left to send it into overtime.
Alderson-Broaddus started off on a hot foot with three goals in the first six minutes for the quick lead. The Battlers controlled most of the momentum in a first quarter flooded with Walsh penalties. The Cavs were flagged six times for a total of 4:30. Fortunately for Walsh, the Battlers were only able to convert on one of the man-up opportunities.
Walsh eventually got on the scoreboard with a pair of goals by Ben Stephens (Jr., 6-0, Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) that made the score 3-2. Alderson-Broaddus added another goal to make it 4-2 after one period of play. The rolls were switched in the second quarter as the Cavs scored four goals to the Battlers’ two to send both teams to the halftime break notched at 6-6.
In the third quarter, both teams exchanged goals a couple of times, but a penalty on the Battlers gave Walsh a man-up opportunity that Stephens took advantage of with his fourth goal of the game with an assist from Ian Maurer (Jr., Jackson, OH/HS). The score gave Walsh a 9-8 lead going into the fourth. Both teams exchanged goals twice again in the fourth before Alderson-Broaddus’ Teigan Haft scored with a few second remaining to set up the exciting ending.
Alderson-Broaddus won the face-off at the start of overtime and had the first opportunity to end the game, but Lockwood made perhaps the biggest save of his career to end the threat. After Walsh cleared, both teams exchanged turnovers. Murphy found himself with possession of the ball and raced down the middle of the field in front of the net and slipped it past the goalie to end the game and send the rest of his team into a roar.
Murphy also had two assists for three points. Stephens had a strong game with five goals in total. Maurer and Mason Axline (Jr., 5-7, Green, OH/HS) each had a pair of goals.
Haft gave Walsh problems all day as he had 19 shots, 16 on goal, with seven goals and three assists to lead all scorers.
Both teams were playing in their regular season finale.
