Softball, 2014-04-27

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) - With a sweep of Lake Erie this afternoon, Jaime Porter surpassed the 100-win mark in her fourth season as head coach of the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers (28-17, 15-9) defeated the Storm (5-34, 1-25) defeated the Storm by scores of  6-3 and 6-4. The victories also helped clinch a spot in next week’s GLIAC Playoffs.

Porter also becomes the fastest coach to reach 100 wins. Ed Vargo is the only other coach in Cavs’ history to reach the plateau and did so during his fifth year.

In the opener, Walsh jumped out to a 6-0 lead before it held off a Lake Erie rally in the final three frames. The Cavs initially took a 1-0 lead in the first, but a five-run fifth helped the Maroon and Gold take control of the game.

Sam Troxell (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS/YSU) got the offense rolling with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single that scored Anna Fach (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/John Carroll), Riley Kiesling (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover/Findlay) and Chelsy Testa (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake). Troxell eventually ended up on third after she advanced to second on a throw home and went to third on an error. She scored one bater later as Eryn Simon (Sr., Oregon, OH/Clay) grounded out to the shortstop. Walsh made it 6-0 after Anna Anderson (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) doubled to left center and was brought in on another double by Rachel Dedinsky (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) to left field.

Lake Erie refused to yield, however, as they answered with a two-run homer by Hannah Sheve in the bottom of the frame. The Storm added another run in the sixth, but couldn’t take advantage of three hits paired with two Walsh errors and left two on base.

Casi Rohr (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) earned the win to improve to 16-11. She gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five in five innings of work. Quartni Whited (Fr., Akron, OH/Springfield) came on in relief and pitched two innings and struck out one.

Lake Erie gave Walsh a scare in the second game as it jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second innings, but the Cavs rallied to tie the game with four runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth for the win. Walsh had four hits and took advantage of two errors in the inning as Marissa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS), Jordan Monnot (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS), Kiesling, and Testa all scored.

Bondoni eventually scored the go-ahead and game-winning run on double to left center by Anderson. Jenna Head (Fr., Mantua, OH/Crestwood) scored an insurance run on a ground out by Fach.

Bondoni picked up the win in the circle as she came on in relief of Maggie Murphy (Fr., Dover, oH/HS). Bondoni pitched the final 5.2 innings and didn’t allow a single run. She struck out six batters on the day.

Troxell finished the day 3-of-5 on the day with two runs scored and three RBI.

The Cavaliers now wait to see who their opponent will be for the GLIAC Playoffs. The tournament will take place from May 2-4 at Marathon Diamonds Complex in Findlay, Ohio.
