4.3.13 BASEBALL: Northwood Avoids Sweep; Rallies for 4-3 Win
(Midland, MI) Tyler Beatty's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Northwood University (9-11, 4-5) to a 4-3 win over Walsh (13-9, 7-5) in the final game of the three-game GLIAC series. The loss snapped Walsh's three-game win streak. The Cavs begin a three-game series at the University of Findlay on Saturday.
Walsh opened the scoring with a run in the fifh inning to take a 1-0 lead. Andrew Bonnette's (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) RBI single up the middle scored RJ Vukovich (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover), who opened the inning with a single to center.
Northwood scored an unearned run to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Walsh regained the lead in the seventh. Vukovich singled with one out, and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. After Sam Fondriest (Jr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) walked, Bonnette singled to center scoring Vukovich.
Zach Speer (Sr., Stow, OH/HS) came on for the Cavs in the bottom of the seventh, relieving Jeff Kotlar (Sr., Euclid, OH/HS). Kotlar allowed only five hits, and an unearned run in six innings. After Northwood tied the game, Beatty hit a two-run homer to right to give the Timberwolves a 4-2 lead.
Walsh added a run in the ninth, when Fondriest tripled to right, and scored on Bonnette's ground out to second.
Bonnette, Trevor Smith (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) and Vukovich each had two hits for the Cavs. Bonnette drove in all three runs. Speer was tagged with the loss.
