Baseball, 2013-04-30

Walsh won a pair of big games against visiting Mercyhurst by scores of 5-3 and 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers improve to 22-17 and the Lakers fall to 30-18. Mercyhurst was ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region.

In game one, Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) hit a two-run homer in the first inning and John Stephenson (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) smashed a two-run shot in the fourth to support the five-hit pitching of Jeff Kotlar (Sr., Euclid, OH/HS). Kotlar fanned three and walked one in six innings in improving to 4-2. Neal Edwards (So., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) pitched the seventh to pick-up his team-leading eighth save of the season. Stephenson, Andrew Bonnette (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) and Sam Fondriest (Jr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) each had two hits.

In game two, the Cavs scored three runs in both the second and third frames en route to the 7-0 victory. Two Mercyhurst errors and three hits led to Cavs’ runs in the second as Stephenson, Justin Clements (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson), and Mike Lee (Jr., Barberton, OH/HS) all scored. All three rounded the bases once again in the third. Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS) added an insurance run in the sixth off of a sacrifice fly by Boggs. Brandon Whitslar recorded the win with six hits and six strikeouts in five innings of work.

Walsh now goes on the road to play Ohio Dominican in a double-header on Thursday. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
