4.4.13 SOFTBALL: Walsh Takes Two from Malone
(Canton, OH) Walsh (11-7, 2-4) took both ends of a GLIAC double header at Malone University (6-16, 0-10) today. The Cavs won game one 8-2, and game two 8-0 in five innings. The Cavs play their home opener on Saturday, when they host Northwood University in a GLIAC twinbill at 1 pm. The Cavs host Lake Superior State on Sunday at 12 pm.
Walsh banged out 12 hits in the opener. After Malone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Walsh scored three runs in the third and fifth innings, and then added two more in the seventh. Anna Fach (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/John Carroll) singled in Calee Ruppel (So., Mogadore, OH/HS), who reached on a bunt single to tie the game in the third. After Fach moved to second base on a wild pitch, she scored on Chelsy Testa's (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) double to center. Testa would then score on an error to give Walsh a 3-1 lead. The Cavs would extend the lead in the fifth, keyed by Ashley Starr's (Fr., Bloomigdale, OH/Indian Creek) two-run single to center. Starr then scored on Eryn Simon's (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) single through the left side. Walsh then added two unearned runs in the seventh. Rupple, Testa, Starr and Olivia Jesionek (So., Parma, OH/Holy Name) each had two hits. Senior Erin Ebert (Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) went all the way, pitching a five-hitter. She fanned six in improving to 3-4.
Walsh’s top three hitters produced six hits, four RBI and scored seven runs in the nightcap. The Cavs scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and two more in the fourth. Fach was 2-2 with a double, triple and three RBI. Ruppel was 2-3 and Dana Brown (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) was 2-3. Ruppel scored three runs, with Fach and Brown each scoring twice. Casi Rohr (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) pitched no-hit ball for four innings to pick-up the win and improve to 6-2. She fanned nine. Rohr has fanned 22 batters in her last two games.
