4.5.12 BASEBALL: Cavs Take Pair of Close Games From Urbana
Walsh continued its winning streak with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Urbana by scores of 3-2 and 5-4 Thursday afternoon. In both games, the Cavaliers (20-14) had to come from behind to defeat the Blue Knights (12-16).
The opening game was a thriller that saw Walsh come away with a bases-loaded walk-off single by Sam Fondriest (So., 6-2, Dover, OH/Tusky Central Catholic) in the 11th inning. Jordan Shank (Fr., 6-0, Canton, OH/GlenOak) scored the winning run as a pinch runner for Tyler Jones (Sr., 5-10, Mansfield, OH/Madison), who reached base after being hit by a pitch.
The Cavs scored their other two runs in the second and fourth frames after the Blue Knights plated runs in the first and second. Forrest Boggs (Jr., 6-2, Suffield, OH/Field/Mercyhurst) first put Walsh on the board after he reached on a single to center before being brought home on a double by Justin Clements (So., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson). Walsh tied the game when Steve Wido (Jr., 6-2, North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) brought Jones home from first on a double.
Zach Speer (Jr., 5-10, Stow, OH/HS) picked up the win to improve to 1-2 on the season. He gave up one hit and struck out three batters in three innings of work. Travis Danner (Sr., 5-11, Medina, OH/HS/Cuyahoga Community College) started the game and gave up four hits, fanned nine batters against two walks, and gave up two unearned runs.
It the bottom end of the twin bill, Urbana jumped out to a 3-0 lead in its opening at bat. Walsh cut the deficit to one thanks to Boggs’ seventh home run of the season, an opposite field shot over the left field fence that brought home Tim Stinson (Jr., 5-10, Alliance, OH/Marlington). The Blue Knights added another run in the second to make the score 4-2. Boggs came to the rescue again with a two-RBI double to tie the game. Boggs finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored.
The deciding run came when Stinson doubled to left center to score Fondriest who led off the inning with a double to the same spot. Billy Gura (Sr., 6-0, Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) earned the complete game win and is now 5-2 on the season. He gave up four runs on six hits with one strikeout and two walks.
The two teams will meet again for two more games on Saturday at Urbana. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
