4.6.14 BASEBALL: Cavs Win 7th Straight; Sweep Findlay
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (16-15, 8-5) completed its second consecutive series sweep with a 3-1 win over the University of Findlay (8-16, 5-9) today. Walsh has now won its last seven games. The Cavs are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Lake Erie College for a single game at 4 pm.
The Cavs scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. The red-hot Mike Lee (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) singled home Brook Clark (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) with the first run in the first. After Drew Link (Sr., Granville, OH/HS) doubled to start the third, Lee would double him home to give Walsh a 2-0 lead.
After Findlay scored an unearned run in the fifth, Walsh got the run back on an infield single by Sam Fondriest (Sr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) in the bottom of the inning.
The one run was all that was needed for Cavs starter Brandon Whitslar (Jr., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf). The right-hander worked eight strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, while fanning five to improve to 5-1. Neal Edwards (Jr., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) pitched the ninth to pick-up his third save of the season.
Lee was 3-3, with two RBI. In Walsh's six GLIAC games this week, Lee went 12-19 (.632) with two homers, three doubles and 10 RBI. Link, Andrew Bonnette (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) and John Stephenson (Sr., Dover, OH/New Philadelphia) each had two hits.
Notes: Clark hit .474 for the week with seven RBI, and Link hit .421. The Cavs hit .376 as a team in the six GLIAC games. Whitslar allowed only one earned run in two starts and went 2-0.
