4.6.14 SOFTBALL: Cavs Slip By Lake State In Sweep

Softball, 2014-04-06

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – In a pair of one-run games, Walsh was able to sweep by Lake Superior State by the slimmest of margins with a 1-0 victory followed by a 5-4 decision in eight innings. With the pair of wins, the Cavaliers are now 18-11 overall and 8-4 in the GLIAC. The Lakers drop to 4-12 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC.

In the first game, Anna Anderson (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) and Chelsy Testa (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) provided the heroics for the Cavs as they teamed up for the game’s only run in the top of the seventh inning. As Walsh served as the visitor for this doubleheader that was originally scheduled to be played at Lake Superior, Testa ripped a double to left center with two outs. Anderson, who doubled down the right field line earlier in the inning, was able to score.

Lake State threatened to tie in the bottom of the frame, but left two runners stranded as Casi Rohr earned the complete game shutout. Rohr was again masterful in the circle as she allowed just three hits and struck out eight against two walks.

Rohr wasn’t done there, however, as she came on in relief in the second game to pick up another win and improve to 10-7. With the Cavs up 4-1 in the fifth, Rohr entered the game with the bases loaded and none out in the fifth. While she didn’t allow a runner she faced to score, the Lakers still tied the game at 4-4.

Once again, the Cavs had some late-inning heroics. This time Testa was the one that crossed the plate on a walk-off RBI single by Presley Destro (Jr., Mogadore, OH/HS/Catawba) with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Rohr allowed two hits, the first two batters she faced, and nearly retired the Lakers in order after that as she struck out three with one walk.

After Lake State scored one run in the opening frame, Walsh answered with a pair of runs in both the second and third innings. Maggie Murphy (Fr., Dover, OH/HS) hit an RBI single through the left side to score Marissa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS) and Destro in the second. In the third, Jenna Head (Fr., Mantua, OH/Crestwood) doubled down the left field line to score Sam Troxell (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/SVSM) and scored one batter later as Destro singled up the middle.

Destro finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Head was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Cavs are scheduled to return to the diamond against Davis & Elkins this Tuesday. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., weather permitting.
