Baseball, 2013-04-07

(Findlay, OH) Walsh (15-10, 9-6) pounded out a season-high 21 hits in defeating the University of Findlay (11-15, 5-10) 16-2 to win the rubber game of the three-game GLIAC series. For Walsh, it was their fourth straight series win. The Cavs return home on Wednesday for a GLIAC twin bill with Lake Erie College at 2 pm.

Walsh scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, and took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning. Joe Tann (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) pitched shutout ball the first five innings, allowing only three hits. Brandon Whitslar (So., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) relieved Tann, and was touched for two runs in the sixth as the Oilers tied the game.

Walsh would begin to put runs on the board in bunches in the seventh inning when they scored four times to take a 6-2 lead. Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) walked to start the inning, and advanced to second on John Stephenson's (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) single through the left side.  After a fielders choice moved the runners to second and third, Jordan Shank (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) walked to load the bases. Andy DePeel (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) would drive in a run with a sacrifice fly to give Walsh a 3-2 lead. Sam Fondriest (Jr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) then singled home a run to make it 4-2. Walsh would add another run on an error, and would make it 6-2 on Andrew Bonnette's (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) single to right.

The Cavs added two runs in the eighth inning on DePeel's two-run triple and then exploded for eight runs in the ninth inning. The Cavs moved runners station to station in the ninth, with four different players driving in runs with hits.

Bonnette went 4-6 with two RBI. DePeel was 2-5 with 5 RBI. Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS), Justin Clements (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson), Boggs, Stephenson, Shank and Fondriest each had two hits.

Whitslar (3-1) was the winning pitcher in relief.
