4.7.13 SOFTBALL: Cavs Sink Lake State in Doubleheader Sweep

Softball, 2013-04-07

Walsh got back on the winning track with a sweep of visiting Lake Superior State by scores of 5-2 and 5-1 on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers 13-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference. The Lakers drop to 7-10 overall and 5-9 in the conference.

In the opener, the Cavs broke loose from a defensive stalemate with two runs in both the fifth and sixth inning after the Lakers tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth. Kaleigh Cupka (So., Streetsboro, OH/Walsh Jesuit), pinch running for Madi Jordan (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) who reached on a walk, provided the go-ahead run  on a bases-loaded single to right field by Anna Fach (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/John Carroll).  Dana Brown (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) later scored after an error on the short stop.  Calee Ruppel (So., Mogadore, OH/HS) and Marissa Bondoni (Fr., Alliance, OH/HS) added insurance runs in the sixth.

Erin Ebert (Sr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) picked up the win to improve to 4-5 on the year. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with six strikeouts against five walks.  Brown had an impressive game as she finished 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ruppel and Fach also had multiple hit games.

In the second game, a four-run fifth inning propelled the Cavs to a 5-1 win. Casi Rohr (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) helped her own cause in the circle with a home run to left field to start the inning and gave Walsh a 2-0 lead.  Errors aided the rest of the runs as Crystal Pfleger (Sr., Mogadore, OH/Field) scored from third after Lake State’s catcher threw the ball into the outfield in attempt to pick off Brown, who took third base as a result. Brown then scored after Kayla Marcus (Jr., Bergholz, OH/Edison) reached on an error.  Chelsy Testa (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) hit in Marcus two batters later.

Rohr improved to 7-3 with the win. She went the distance and allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts against three walks.

Walsh returns to action this Wednesday as the Cavaliers hit the road to play a doubleheader at Ashland. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
