4.9.13 MEN'S LACROSSE: Cavs Fly By Barons

Men's Lacrosse, 2013-04-09

Walsh had little trouble with visiting Franciscan as the hosts coasted to a 19-1 victory in non-conference action at Vasco Field Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers improve to 2-4 on the season while the Barons fall to 1-10.

The game was tied early on at 1-1, but Walsh limited almost any offensive threat the Barons could muster while bombarding them with shots.  The Cavs scored a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the quarter, and turned on the jets with six goals in the next two periods.

It didn’t take long for the Cavs to score their first goal as Ben Stephens (Jr., 6-0, Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) started a career day with his first score on an assist from Mason Axline (Jr., 5-7, Green, OH/HS) 1:27 into the game. Stephens finished the game with seven goals and four assists for 11 points. Ian Maurer (Jr., 6-2, Jackson, OH/HS) also had a big afternoon with five goals and three assists for eight points. Axline also had eight points on two goals and six assists. Jeff Balzano (Jr., 6-0, Chesterland, OH/West Geauga) didn’t have to worry too much between the pipes, but he did make three saves when called upon.

In total, the Cavs outshot the Barons 52-7, won 19 of the 23 face-offs, and controlled the ground ball advantage 40-10.

The Cavaliers will return to conference action as they host the Lake Erie Storm on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
