5.1.14 BASEBALL: Cavs Tripped By ODU 7-3
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh dropped its home finale to Ohio Dominican by a score of 7-3 in GLIAC action Thursday afternoon. The Cavaliers (22-24, 14-14) are now clinging to the sixth and final playoff spot for next week’s GLIAC tournament. The Panthers (24-21, 13-16) remain alive in the hunt for the post season.
The Cavaliers struck first in the first with a pair of runs on three hits with an assist on an error by Ohio Dominican. Jordan Shank (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Bonnette (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS). Two batters later, Johnny Knight (R-Fr., Jefferson, OH/Area) singled in Drew Link (Sr., Granville, OH/HS) with a hit through the left side.
The Panthers retaliated with two runs in the top of the second to tie the game and took a 4-2 lead with another pair in the third.
Walsh had another big inning in the fourth, but could only get one run out of it on three hits and two ODU errors. Justin Clements (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) made it 4-3 after he scored on a single to left by Sam Fondriest (Sr., Dover, OH/Tusc. Central Catholic).
That was the closest the Cavs could get as the Panthers added two insurance runs in the eighth and another in the final frame to set up the final score.
Ian Drapcho (Sr., Dover, OH/HS) picked up the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. He gave up six runs, three earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts against one base on balls.
The Cavaliers now travel to the Motor City to close out the regular season with a three-game series which starts tomorrow against Wayne State in hopes of advancing to the GLIAC post-season next week. Tomorrow’s game will be a single nine-inning game with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
