5.10.12 BASEBALL: Cavs Place Eight on All-AMC Team; Jones Tabbed as Player of the Year
The American Mideast Conference has released the all-conference baseball team and Walsh has eight players represented on the list. Among them is Tyler Jones (Sr., 5-10, Mansfield, OH/Madison), the Cavaliers’ catcher, who was named Player of the Year.
First baseman Forrest Boggs (Jr., 6-2, Suffield, OH/Field/Mercyhurst), outfielder Justin Clements (So., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson), and starting pitcher Travis Danner (Sr., 5-11, Medina, OH/Cuyahoga CC) also are first team selections. Second team members include third baseman Trevor Smith (Jr., 5-10, Parma, OH/Holy Name), outfielder Tim Stinson (Jr., 5-10, Alliance, OH/Marlington), outfielder Drew Link (So., 5-10, Granville, OH/HS), and starting pitcher Billy Gura (Sr., 6-0, Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel).
Jones hit .344 (52-for-151) for the Cavs this season. He batted in 33 runs and scored 21 himself with a home run, a triple, 11 doubles, 14 walks, and eight hit-by-pitches. His 33 RBI were second-most on the team and he recorded 68 total bases, tied for third-most on the team.
Boggs was always a threat at the plate and was one of three players to start all 52 games for the Cavaliers. Boggs hit .365 (61-for-167) and led the team in hits, home runs with eight, triples with five, doubles with 13, RBI with 48, total bases with 108, and was second on the team in runs scored with 40. Clements led the team in batting with a .422 average (38-for-90). He also had three home runs, a triple, nine doubles, 18 RBI, and 20 runs scored. Danner was the Cavs top pitcher this season as he posted a 2.15 ERA and an 8-1 record. The southpaw also led the team in innings pitched with 75.1, strikeouts with 66, and second on the team in complete games with six.
Smith and Stinson were the other two players to start all 52 games for Walsh. Smith hit .329 (51-for-155) with 17 RBI, 34 runs scored, a triple, and five doubles on the season. His 17 bases on balls were second-most on the team. Stinson hit .322 (58-for-180) with five home runs, two triples, 12 doubles, 39 RBI, and 39 runs scored. Link hit .345 (60-for-174) on the year with a triple, six doubles, 17 RBI, and 41 runs scored. Link’s 12 stolen bases were tops on the team. Gura made 11 starts for the Cavs and went 6-5 on the year with three complete games. His six wins were second on the team. Overall he pitched 59.2 innings and struck out 23 batters.
