5.2.14 BASEBALL: Wayne State Rallies to Nip Cavs
(DETROIT, Mich) Walsh (22-25, 14-15) could not hold leads of 2-0 and 3-2, and lost 4-3 at Wayne State University (32-13, 20-9) in a key GLIAC game today. The loss drops the Cavs into a tie with Saginaw Valley for sixth place, the final GLIAC playoff spot. The Cavs and Wayne State play a double header at 12 pm tomorrow.
The game was scoreless in the sixth inning when Sam Fondriest (Sr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) doubled home Mike Lee (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) and Justin Clements (Sr., Massllon, OH/Jackson) to give the Cavs a 2-0 lead.
Wayne State came right back and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning, on a Zimmerman homer, and after an error,.
Walsh regained the lead in the seventh, when Jordan Shank (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) scored on a ground ball off the bat of Andrew Bonnette (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS).
Wayne State would push across two runs in the bottom of eighth to take a 4-3 lead after just one hit, and two Walsh errors.
Shank reached base on an error with one outin the ninth, and advanced to third base on a single through the right-side by Drew Link (Sr., Granville, OH/HS). Shank tried to score the tying run on a ground ball off the bat of Bonnette, but was thrown out at the plate. Lee then fanned to end the ball game.
Brandon Whitslar (Jr., Seville,OH/Cloverleaf) started for the Cavs, and worked into the seventh before being replaced by Neal Edwards (Jr., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary), who was charged with the loss.
Joe Tann (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Danny Roper (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) will toe the rubber in the twinbill tomorrow.
