5.2.14 SOFTBALL: Cavs Stun Saginaw for Opening Round Win, Fall To Wayne State

(FINDLAY, Ohio) Number six seed Walsh (29-18) exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun number three seed Saginaw Valley State University (26-11) 6-2 in their openeing round GLIAC Playoff game. The Cavs then lost 4-1 to number two seed Wayne State University (39-9) to fall into the loser's bracket. Walsh plays top seeded Ohio Dominican University (26-26) at 10 am tomorrow morning in an elimination game.

SVSU struck first, snapping a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Walsh starter Casi Rohr (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo).

Walsh's seventh inning rally began with Sam Troxell's (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS/YSU) lead-off double to left. After Troxell moved to third base on a sacrifice, she scored on a ground ball for the Cavs' first run. Jenna Head (Fr., Mantua, OH/Crestwood) then kept things alive with a two-out single, and scored  on Anna Anderson's (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) double to center to tie the game. Rachel Dedinsky (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) then sinlged home Anderson to give the Cavs a 3-2 lead. Abby Reusser (Fr., Orrville, OH/HS) then walked, and came home with Dedinsky when Chelsy Testa (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) hit a three-run inside the park homerun to left to give the Cavs a 6-2 lead. 

Rohr then retired the side the to record her 17th win of the season. She scattered six hits and fanned four.

In the second game, Walsh gave up three runs in the first two innings and couldn’t recover in a 4-1 loss to Wayne State in the winner’s bracket.

The Cavs scored their lone run when Simon hit in Riley Kiesling (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover/Findlay) on a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning. Kiesling originally reached on a single down the left field line. She advanced to second base on a passed ball and went to third on a single by Troxell. 

Quartni Whited (Fr., Akron, OH/Springfield) took the loss to drop to 4-3 on the season.
