Baseball, 2012-05-03

On Senior Day, Walsh kept close with Malone but was unable to defeat its rival as the Cavaliers fell by scores of 8-5 and 7-3. The Cavs (26-24) will meet up again with the Pioneers (28-19) on the road to close out the season with another doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.

The Cavs struck first with a run in the second inning of the first game, but Malone answered by scoring one in the third and two in the fourth.  Walsh plated another run in the fifth to make the score 3-2. The Pioneers responded once again with five runs in the sixth. The Cavaliers made a strong comeback attempt with a three-run seventh, but could not get closer.

R.J. Vukovich (Jr., 5-9, North Canton, OH/Hoover/West Liberty) had a strong outing as he went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to start the rally. Justin Clements (So., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Billy Gura (Sr., 6-0, Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) took the loss to fall to 6-5. He gave up three runs, two earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.

Walsh had its chances in the nightcap with 10 runners left on base, but couldn’t get over the hump as Malone staved off another comeback attempt. Both teams scored a run in the opening frame. Malone added single runs in the second, third and fifth to make it a 4-1 game. A two-run homer by Tim Stinson (Jr., 5-10, Alliance, OH/Marlington) cut the deficit to one at 4-3 in the fifth, but Malone added two in the sixth and one in the seventh to close out the game. Stinson went 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI.

Joe Tann (Fr., 6-3, Canton, OH/Central Catholic) took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year. He gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits with a strikeout and two walks in 4.1 innings.

Between games, Gura, Jordan Tucker (6-2, University Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights), Travis Danner (5-11, Medina, OH/HS/Cuyahoga CC), and Tyler Jones (5-10, Mansfield, OH/Madison) were honored  as seniors.
