5.4.12 SOFTBALL: Cavs Eliminate No. 1 Notre Dame; Fall to Urbana in OIC Finals

Softball, 2012-05-04

Walsh advanced to the Ohio Independent Championship final with a defeat of host and No. 1 seed Notre Dame College 7-0, but fell in the championship to upstart No. 5 seed Urbana 7-2. The Cavaliers (36-18) eliminated the Falcons (17-20), who fell to the Blue Knights (24-26) in the first game of the day at 11 a.m.

It didn’t take long for the offense to get started as the Cavs scored four runs in their first at-bat. Kelsey Ford (Sr., Boardman, OH/HS) started the barrage with a two-RBI double to left center. Kendra Gerber (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) followed that up with a double to right center to plate Ford. Gerber later scored on a wild pitch. Walsh scored two more in the second and one in the third to make the score 7-0.

Erin Ebert (Jr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) pitched her second-straight shutout of the tournament. She allowed only three hits with five strikeouts against two walks. Ebert also started the second game, but took the loss as she allowed three runs on three hits with a strikeout and three walks. With the split, she finished the season 16-8.

Walsh held a 2-1 lead going into the sixth inning, but Urbana rallied for three runs in each of the final two frames. Hanna Dodson (Fr., Newark, OH/Licking Valley) hit in Chelsy Testa (So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) to tie the game at 1-1 in the first. Testa scored again a couple of innings later when Kaliegh Cupka (Fr., Streetsboro, OH/Walsh Jesuit) pinch hit and hit a single to left field.

If the Cavaliers would have won, they would have had to defeat Urbana a second time to win the Ohio Independent Championship. Next season, Walsh will be a full member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
