5.8.12 VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Add Five
Women's Volleyball, 2012-05-08
(North Canton, OH) Walsh University head volleyball coach Erin Foster has announced the signing of five student-athletes for the 2012 fall season.
The Cavaliers inked outside hitter/defensive specialist Maria Grecol (Strongsville, OH/HS), defensive specialist Emilee Muzechuk (Mansfield, OH/Madison), outside hitter Devin Hummel (Shelby, OH/HS), middle hitter Janelle Yunker (Marysville, OH/HS) and outside hitter Kelsey Snider (Olmstead Falls, OH/HS) to national letters of intent.
“These five student athletes will be excellent additions to our program next season,” said Foster, who will be entering her third season as the Walsh University Head Coach. “It’s a larger class than we’ve had in the past, but with the loss of four defensive players last season we needed to bring in players that could start competing right away. Our returning core squad is very strong, and has really established the work ethic and atmosphere in the gym. We looked for players this year that could add to that culture that’s been established and who could raise the competition level at practice. With the move to NCAA DII and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next season, we needed to elevate the type of player coming in- the total package athlete with attributes like: attitude, work ethic, skill, the ability to be a great teammate, and an exceptional tenacity in the classroom. Each of these five student athletes will bring these qualities and many more to what is bound to be a very exciting season for the Cavaliers.”
Grecol is a 5-8 outside hitter from Strongsville High School. She is a 2012 All-Conference and All-District 2 player for the Mustangs. Additionally she gained NACA All-Tournament Team honors in 2009 and 2010, and was named Defensive MVP in 2010. Maria is currently a member of Southwest VBC. Maria plans to major in pre-med at Walsh.
“Maria is an outstanding player who I believe, has not quite yet recognized her full potential in the sport. She has incredible athleticism and an unmatched work ethic,” said Foster. “I look to Maria to come in and really make her mark as soon as she walks through the doors this fall. She’ll compete to play all the way around, and we’re incredibly excited about the defense she brings to the floor. She’s a great student-athlete and exactly the type of player that we look for here at Walsh.”
Muzechuk, a 5-9 outside hitter/defensive specialist from Madison Comprehensive High School in Mansfield, Ohio has signed to play for the Cavaliers for the 2012 season. Emilee has earned Ohio Cardinal Conference and Northwest District awards, and has been a State Final Four participant for three years. She is a member of the Central Elite 18-Green Club team this season. Emilee looks to study nursing at Walsh.
“Emilee is an extremely versatile player. She really did a wonderful job at Madison in her senior year leading her team and was excellent in any position she was asked to play,” said Foster. “She’s very aggressive defensively and is the type of player we wanted to bring in this season. We wanted someone who isn’t afraid to take charge in the back row and I believe she’s the one to do it. She also has the ability to swing, and I believe she can excel no matter where we put her. She’s a great athlete and someone I believe will be a difference maker in our program. We are incredibly excited to have her as a Cavalier!”
Hummel, a 5-8 outside hitter from Shelby Senior High School in Shelby, Ohio has signed to play for the Walsh Cavaliers in the upcoming season. Devin has earned many awards for the Whippets including: First team NOL honors from 2008 to 2011, District 6 Second Team Honors, District 6 first team, 1,012 career kills, member of the 2011 second place team at Junior National Volleyball Championships, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Junior Nationals in Atlanta. She is currently a member of the Northshore Volleyball Club. Devin plans to major in pre-med at Walsh.
“We are thrilled to have Devin as a part of our program next season. She is an extremely athletic and dynamic player,” said Foster. She’s got an excellent work ethic and I feel that she is going to be a great addition to our squad. She’s played in high level completion and she’s ready to take her game to the next level. I am confident that she will walk through the doors here at Walsh and immediately strive to make her mark.”
Yunker is a 6-0 middle blocker from Marysville High School in Marysville, Ohio. She earned first team OCC honors, Honorable Mention District Offense award, and 2011 MVP for the Monarchs last season. She’s currently a member of the Kaepa Buckeye Club, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Janelle plans to major in early childhood education at Walsh.
“Janelle will be a great offensive addition to our program. She’s got a great court sense and is an extremely hard worker. She’ll be an important part of our offense as she learns our systems and challenges our current middles. She’ll really elevate the competition level in the gym and we are very excited to have her as a Cavalier next season!”
Snider is a 5-10 outside hitter and defensive specialist from Olmstead Falls High school. She earned first-team all-district honors in 2010-2011, first-team All-Conference 2010-2011, honorable mention all-district and conference 2009, and was a member of the 2008 state championship team. She also ran track for Olmstead Falls earning first-team all-district honors in 2009 and 2010, team MVP in 2010 and set the school record in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley. Kelsey plans to major in nursing at Walsh.
“Kelsey is an excellent athlete who will make a great addition to our squad,” said Foster. “After an ACL tear took her out of her spring Junior Olympic season this year, I’m confident that she will work hard to get herself back on the court. She’s a hard worker who is determined to make a full recovery and start to contribute as soon as possible.”
