5.9.13 BASEBALL: Bonnette, Boggs and Smith Named All-GLIAC
(BAY CITY, Mich.) - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced its all-conference squads and post-season award winners, and a trio of Walsh Cavaliers has earned accolades. Andrew Bonnette (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) earned the highest honors as a member of the 2013 GLIAC Baseball All-Conference Second Team. Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) and Trevor Smith (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) were named to GLIAC Baseball All-Conference Honorable Mention Team.
Bonnette had a breakout season and finished as the team’s best hitter. The outfielder played in 36 games with 31 starts and had a batting average of .347 as he went 41-of-118 from the plate. That generated in to 21 runs scored and 16 RBI, both second on the team. Bonnette recorded five extra-base hits with four doubles and a home run. He also led the team in slugging percentage at .407.
Boggs was an offensive threat every time he walked up to the plate, which was often as he played and started in all but one game this season. The switch-hitter had a batting average of .309 with 42 hits in 136 at-bats. He led the team in home runs with three, RBI with 23, total bases with 55, and on base percentage at .420. Boggs was also one of the top fielders on the team with a .992 fielding percentage.
Smith capped off his Walsh career with 38 starts in 39 games played. He hit .259 this season with four doubles and 10 RBI. Smith’s on base percentage was the second-best on the team at .411. He led the team in hit-by-pitches with 13, fourth-most in the conference.
The Cavs finished the season 22-22 overall and 14-17 in the GLIAC.
