5.9.14 MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: Groubert Sets School Record, Makes Provo Mark

(MEADVILLE, Pa.) – Justin Groubert (Jr., Hartville, OH/Lake) set a new school record and reached an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 1,500 meter run to highlight Walsh’s day at the Gator Invitational. The event was hosted by Allegheny College.

Groubert ran the event in 3:52.65 to finish third behind winner Chansler Poole of St. Vincent and Morgan Elliott of Slippery Rock. Poole finished with a time of 3:50.14. The provisional mark to clear was 3:52.7. Marvin Smith held the previous record which was set in 1988.

Sherman Kortze (Fr., Green, OH/CVCA) finished fourth in the 400 meter dash to also place for the Cavaliers. He ran the lap with a time of 49.17. Teammate Seth Wieland (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Green) finished sixth in the same event with a time of 49.89. The two athletes flipped places in the 200 meter dash as Wieland finished fourth with a time of 22.44. Kortze finished the 200 with a time of 22.61.

Matt Thiessen (So., Navarre, OH/Perry) and Naimbai Njerakey (R-Fr., Seven Springs, VA/Wheaton) also had fourth place finishes today. Thiessen finished fourth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:04.02 while Njerakey finished the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:55.06.

Should Groubert make the Division II National Championships in Allendale, Mich., the meet will start on Thursday, May 22, and run through Saturday, May 24.
