Walsh University Announces Athletic Department Realignment
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh University Vice President for Athletics/Director of Athletics Dale Howard has announced the following changes to the athletic department. Ellen Kutz is stepping down as Assistant Athletic Director/Director of Compliance and Senior
Women’s Administrator, and is being replaced by Jason Fautas in the compliance/assistant athletic director role. Fautas, in turn, is stepping down as men’s lacrosse coach and is being replaced by assistant coach Alex Skvarch. Sara Pratt, a member of the compliance department, takes over the role as senior women’s administrator. Ellen will be assuming other duties at the university, which include oversight of the Health Center, Athletic Department liaison dealing with student athlete insurance and Academic Advising.
“I want to thank Ellen Kutz for her diligence in organizing and directing the compliance office during our transition to the NCAA II,” exclaimed Howard. “This was a monumental task that required a significant learning curve on her part, as well as a dedication to the initiative, that proved to be an invaluable component of our full acceptance as NCAA II members. “
“Jason Fautas will now take over the reins of the department, serving as Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Compliance, and I am confident that he will use the mentoring that Ellen Kutz provided to maintain the excellent track record of this office. Jason did such a great job getting our men’s lacrosse program transitioned from club status to intercollegiate status and I am fully confident in his abilities to direct the compliance office, which is critical to the success of all of our teams.”
Fautas served as the second coach of the men's lacrosse program at Walsh, and the first at the varsity level. He coached the Cavs for two years. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in management from Hartwick College in 2007 and proceeded to earn his master’s degree in sports leadership at Northeastern University in 2008.
Fautas previously worked as an assistant lacrosse coach at Hartwick in Oneonta, NY following his graduation and remained there until 2010 when he became the top assistant and defensive coordinator at Division I Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.
During his playing career, Fautas was a four-year varsity member and team captain in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, he was the Empire 8 Sportsman of the Year. In 2007, he was the Harry Mosher Memorial Award and Rich Allen Dawkins Award winner. He was also a three-sport athlete at Sachem High School; in Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. Jason is engaged to Jennifer Martin, with plans to marry this August.
Skvarch becomes the third head coach of the men’s lacrosse program and second after it became an official varsity sport. The team played as a club sport at Walsh from 2010 to 2012.
Skvarch joined the program last season as an assistant coach. This is his first head coaching job. He previously served as the defensive coordinator at Hartwick College. While there, Skvarch coached two USILA North/South game participants, four Empire 8 All-League players, and one Academic All-American. Skvarch also played lacrosse at Hartwick where he was a two-year captain, selected to the Empire 8 Second Team in 2011, and ended his four-year career with 153 groundballs and 98 caused turnovers in 51 games. Skvarch was selected to the Empire 8 Sportsman of the Year Team and was named the team’s Defensive MVP in 2011. Skvarch graduated with honors in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
