7.23.13 MEN'S SOCCER: Incoming Cavalier Gonia Plays in Super 20 National Championship
Men's Soccer, 2013-07-23
Adam Gonia, an incoming freshman at Walsh University who will play on the men’s soccer team this upcoming season, recently participated in the Super 20 Championship, an elite under-20 national men’s amateur league. Gonia played on the Pacesetter Villa Football Club that advanced to the national championship game. The championships took place at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fl. This past weekend.
Pacesetter Villa fell 2-0 in the championship, but the accomplishment of reaching the finals is impressive in itself. The Super 20 League is one of the longest standing organizations in North America and allows the top 17- to 20-year olds to compete at a top level. The league also serves as a reserve team system for many PDL teams.
“The Super 20 League has some of the best talent of soccer players at the U-20 level,” said Cavaliers Head Coach John Hall. “Most of the players will be entering their sophomore year in college with a few like Adam entering their freshman year. It is a massive achievement for Adam to have been a member of this squad in its inaugural year. Most of his teammates are playing at the Division I level. To then make it out of their region and play at the national championship, then to make it to the championship game, is something to be proud of.”
Gonia is from Sylvania, Ohio and played his prep career at Northview. He lettered three times as a center midfielder and center back for Jon Haynes. He totaled 13 career goals, with six tallied in his senior year. Gonia also made 29 career assists. He earned All-NLL honors as a senior and second-team honors his junior year. He was also second-team All-District as a senior. Adam is the son of Dave and Sarah Gonia and plans to major in business.
