7.24.12 WOMEN'S GOLF: "Tsangeos Wins Schorsten Title"
Women's Golf, 2012-07-24
Jenny Tsangeos had played the Schorsten Memorial Junior Golf Tournament her entire career. She won her age group in 2008, only to finish second twice since then.
The GlenOak High School graduate and Walsh University sophomore was determined to make her last appearance at Arrowhead Golf Course a winner.
“On the 13th, I wrote this on my arm,” Tsangeos said, pointing to the ‘Believe’ inked on her left forearm. “I birdied it.”
Tsangeos ran off four birdies on the back side, punctuated by a 20-foot birdie putt on 18. That capped a second-round 75 Tuesday that matched Monday’s 75. Tsangeos’ 150 total was good enough to win the girls 16-19 division by 11 shots over Michelle Vlacovsky and gave her the girls overall championship by eight over Gabby Minor, the girls 14-15 winner.
“I wasn’t playing well in the beginning,” Tsangeos said of her 41 with three double bogeys on the front nine. “I didn’t feel well. I struggled. Then I said ‘Just relax and stay focused,’ and I started getting more confident.
“This was the last time I’m playing here,” she added. “I wanted to play the best I could. I knew I had to step it up to win the ($250) scholarship.”
