8.30 FOOTBALL: Walsh University Romps 40-10 over Kentucky Wesleyan in Opener
(OWENSBORO, KY) - Walsh opened NCAA II competition with a 40-10 romp over Kentucky Wesleyan College tonight in the sweltering Kentucky heat. The Cavs were outstanding in all phases of the game, scoring in the air, on the ground, and on special teams.
After a scoreless first quarter, Kentucky Wesleyan scored first on a 21-yard pass play at 11:23 of the second quarter. Walsh didn't take long to answer, when Toba Olarewaju (Sr., 5-10, 200, Youngstown, OH/Christian) returned the ensuing kick-off 86 yards for a TD. The Cavs missed the PAT and trailed 7-6.
The Cavs would take the lead for good on a Jack Dawson's (Sr., 6-2, 191, Columbiana, OH/South Range) three-yard bootleg at 3:24 of the period. Dawson would then complete the scoring drive with a two-point conversion run. Walsh scored again (1:36), when Olarewaju scored on an eight-yard run. The play was setup by a 71-yard pass from Dawson to Anthony Schrock (So., 6-3, 210, Wadsworth, OH/HS). Walsh led 21-7 at the half.
The Cavs scored twice in the third period. Dawson scored his second TD on a six-yard bootleg and George Walker (Fr., 5-9, 195, Springfield, OH/Glen Mills) scored his first collegiate TD on a one-yard plunge. Walsh led 34-7 after three quarters.
Special teams provided the final tally when the Cavs blocked a punt and Darryl Gary (So., 5-9, 157, Fort Myers, FL/South Fort Myers) returned it 39 yards.
Olarewaju led all rushers with 76 yards. Dawson passed for 162 yards, completing 6-10 passes. Walsh totaled 340 yards, while holding the Panthers to 221. The Cavs were 4-4 in the redzone.
Ryan Fehrenbach (Sr, 6-4, 228, Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) led the defense with nine tackles, 3.5 for a sack.
The Cavs open GLIAC play next Saturday (9-8) at Northwood University (12 pm).
