9.10.13 VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Stun Alderson-Broaddus

(PHILLIPPI, WV) Walsh (2-1) rallied from a 2-0 set deficit to stun Alderson-Broaddus University (1-3) by set scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-6 in the fifth and deciding set.

Walsh never led in the opening two sets in falling behind 2-0. In the third set, Walsh snapped a 15-15 tie and never trailed the rest of the way in the 25-23 win. Janelle Yunker’s (6-0, So., Marysville, OH/HS) kill at 24-23 put the set away for the Cavs.

With the fourth set tied at 5-5, Walsh outscored AB 9-4 to take a 14-9 lead. The Cavs maintained the lead until the Battlers regrouped a regained the lead at 19-18. The Cavs trailed 23-20, when they rallied to knot the game at 23.  Back-to-back service aces from Haley Howell (5-11, Fr., Clarkston, MI/Our Lady of the Lakes) gave the Cavs to win and evened the match at 2-2.

Walsh used all the momentum gathered in their back-to-back set wins and steamrolled AB 15-6 in the fifth and deciding set. The Cavs never trailed as they jumped to a 10-3 lead.

Howell handed out a match-high 33 assists and had four aces.  Krissy Sokol (5-9, Sr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) recorded a match-high 15 kills. Paige Chandler (6-0, Sr., Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas), Kelly Miller (6-2, Fr., Green Springs, OH/Old Fort) and Kelsey Snider (5-10 ,So., Olmsted Falls, OH/HS) added eight kills. Miller added a match-best five blocks and Snider a match-best 13 digs,

Walsh competes in the Belmont Abbey Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  The Cavs play UMC Pembroke at 11 am on Friday and Belmont Abbey at 3 pm.  On Saturday, they meet Arkansas Tech at 9 am and Claflin University at 1 pm.
