9.12.13 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Jokovich's Penalty Kick Downs Malone 1-0

Women's Soccer, 2013-09-12

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Lauren Jokovich’s (Sr., 5-4, Canton, OH/Jackson) penalty kick was the difference in Walsh’s 1-0 win over arch rival Malone at Milazzo Field Thursday night. The Cavaliers remain unbeaten at 3-0 on the young season while handing the Pioneers their first loss to drop their record to 2-1.

The penalty kick was set up after Walsh pressured the Malone defense and forced a corner kick, one of seven in the game, in the 32nd minute. As the ball sailed over the players in front of the goal, the Pioneers’ Natalie Rostedt reached her hands up and was called for a handball and charged with a yellow card. Jokovich then lined up and sending the ball to the left of goalkeeper Staci Hackett, who guessed correctly on the dive but was just out of reach.

That was all the Cavaliers needed as the defense held up and recorded its third consecutive shutout. Michaella Stucky (So., 5-5, Medina, OH/HS) made three saves on nine shots faced during the evening. The Cavs outshot the Pioneers 14-9 and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

While this was designated as a non-conference game, the two schools will meet again on Saturday, Oct. 19, for the conference game.

Walsh returns to action against Eastern Oregon out of the Cascade Collegiate Conference in the NAIA on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
