9.14.13 FOOTBALL: Kempe Passes for Record 309 Yards in 25-14 GLIAC Win over Northwood
(CANTON, OH) Paul Kempe (6-1, 190, Jr., Ursuline, OH/HS) passed for a Walsh record 309 yards in a 25-14 GLIAC win over visiting Northwood University (0-2, 0-2) at Fawcett Stadium today. The win evened Walsh’s overall record at 1-1, giving Ted Karras his first coaching victory at Walsh. The win also gives the Cavs a 1-0 record in the GLIAC.
Kempe becomes the first Walsh quarterback to pass for over 300 yards in a single game in the 19-year history of the program. The previous single game mark of 295 yards was set by Matt Jenson in 1998. Kempe passed for 289 yards in the opener against Edinboro. In his first two games as a starter, the southpaw has passed for 598 yards and five TDs, while completing 57% of his passes.
Walsh opened the game with a 10-play, 71-yard drive, and scored on Aaron Male’s (5-11, 195, R-FR., Akron, OH/Ellet) two-yard at 12:43 of the first quarter. The only blemish on the opening drive was huge, when Walsh lost Anthony Schrock (6-3, 210, Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS/University of Akron) to a knee injury on the first play from scrimmage. It is feared that he is lost for the year. Walsh will await the results of an MRI on Monday.
After the defense returned the ball to the offense on a quick three and out, Walsh tacked on another score when Kempe scored on a three-yard run. The second drive was 13 plays and 73 yards. Walsh led 13-0 after a failed extra point.
Northwood trimmed the lead to 13-7 when Glenn Winston scored on a one-yard run with 2:11 to play in the first period. The drive was set-up when Kempe fumbled on the Walsh three-yard line. The Cavs led 13-7 at the half.
Walsh put the game away with two third quarter scores, both on TD passes. First Kempe hit Krishawn Hogan (6-2, 185, Fr., Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) with a strike from 25 yards out with 6:11 left in the third quarter to give Walsh a 19-7 lead. Then, at the tail end of the quarter Kempe connected with Jerald Robinson (6-2, 230, Jr., Canton, OH/South/Michigan) from 20 yards to give Walsh a 25-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Northwood scored with 3:32 to play for the games’ final tally.
Kempe connected with eight different receivers and hooked up with Brody Tonn (6-0, 175, Fr., Massillon, Oh/Washington) nine times for 65 yards. Tonn's nine catched were one shy of Joe Morgan's (New Orleans Saints) single game record of ten. Darryl Gary caught five passes for 51 yards. Robinson led Walsh with 71 receiving yards.
Walsh totaled 500 yards total offense. Steve Smith (5-10, 210, Sr., Norton, OH/HS), Male and Justin Keith (6-2, 230, Jr., Canton, OH/South) combined for 163 yards on the ground. Smith led Walsh with 63 yards, with Male and Keith each totaling 50 yards rushing.
Northwood’s Mitch Robinson passed for 297 yards on 25-50, but Walsh picked him off five times to set a single game record. Pierre Raymond (6-1, 200, Jr., Fort Myers, FL/East Lee County) picked off two passes. C.J. Chatman (5-9, 165, So., Copley, OH/HS), Chad Phillis (6-1, 224, So., Monaca, PA/Central Valley) and Jamaris Brown (5-9, 167, Jr., Fort Myers, FL/Lehigh) also had picks.
Walsh travels to Michigan Tech for a 1 pm GLIAC battle next week. The game will be broadcast live on WNPQ, 95.9.
