9.15.12 FOOTBALL: Cavs Blanked in Second Half; Lose 30-7 in GLIAC Home Opener
Walsh (1-2, 0-2) was blanked 20-0 in the second half and lost 30-7 to Michigan Tech University (2-0, 2-0) in their GLIAC home opener at Fawcett Stadium today. The Cavs will look to snap their modest two-game skid at Ferris State University next Saturday night at 7pm. The game will be broadcast live on Teamline.
Walsh trailed 10-0 midway through the second quarter when Toba Olarewaju (5-10, 200, Sr., Youngstown, OH/Christian) scored on a one-yard run to cut the Tech led to 10-7. The score remained 10-7 through the remainder of the half.
On the third possession of the second half, the Huskies turned a Jack Dawson (6-2, 191, Sr., Columbiana, OH/South Range) interception into points. With Walsh facing third and eight on their own 46-yard line, Dawson's pass was intercepted by Emmett Bjorn and returned to the Cavs' 20-yard line. The Huskies scored two plays later on Charlie Leffingwell's six-yard run to lead 17-7 with 11:05 to play in the third quarter.
Leffingwell scored again on a four-yard pass from Tyler Scarlett to increase the Michigan Tech lead to 24-7 with 3:16 in the third. The Huskies final tally came on Akeem Cason's four-yard run with 13:37 to play.
The Huskies' defense limited Walsh to just 2.8 yards per play and 152 yards total offense. The Cavs totaled just 56 yards rushing. Michigan Tech rolled-up 326 yards total offense, including 195 yards on the ground. Leffingwell led all ball carriers with 65 yards. Cason had 57 yards rushing and starting back Cedrick Barber totaled 50 yards. Tyler Scarlett was 15-25 passing for 131 yards and two TDs. Bryan LaChappell was his favorite target, catching six passes for 73 yards and one score.
Olarewaju led Walsh with 34 yards rushing. Anthony Schrock (6-3, 210, So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) caught three passes for 34 yards.
Cavs defensive back Sir Taylor (6-1, 214, Sr., Albany, NY/Glen Falls/Youngstown State) recorded 16 tackles.
