9.17.13 MEN'S SOCCER: First Half Goal Holds Up As Walsh Defeats Malone

Men's Soccer, 2013-09-17

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) -  In the 50th meeting between two schools located just four miles apart, Walsh defeated rival Malone 1-0 thanks to a first half goal off of a corner kick in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Milazzo Field. The Cavaliers (2-2, 2-0) lead the all-time series 36-15-2 and were playing in their home opener. The Pioneers fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Coming off of a big win at Findlay on Sunday, the Cavs kept the momentum going in their favor. Walsh’s offense kept Malone’s defense on its toes with 10 first half shots and seven shots on goal. One of those shots found its way to the back of the net thanks to Chad Dickerhoof’s (Sr., 6-0, Alliance, OH/Marlington) boot near the top of box following a corner kick by Quebec Gibbins (Jr., 5-10, Canton, OH/Jackson). The corner was punched out by goalie Felipe Monteiro, but Dickerhoof was waiting and sent the ricochet flying off of a Malone defender and into the net at 38:40.

The goal held up the rest of the game, but both teams had many more opportunities to score. Walsh generated nine more shots in the second half, many of which were close but just outside the posts. Malone had eight shots with three on goal in the second stanza. Justin Nolan (Sr., 5-11, Medina, OH/Highland) was brilliant in goal and made four saves during the night. He additionally took away multiple Pioneer opportunities to take shots.

The Cavs now become the road warriors once again three consecutive games away from home. First up is a trip to Northwood on Friday. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
