9.21.13 FOOTBALL: Michigan Tech Too Much For Walsh

Football, 2013-09-21

(HOUGHTON, Mich.) – After a pair of hot starts to the season, the Walsh offense was tamed as Michigan Tech defeated the Cavaliers 29-7 in front of a crowd of 3,224 fans at Sherman Field Saturday afternoon. The Cavs (1-2, 1-1) were limited to 154 yard on offense by a stingy Huskies (2-0, 2-0) defense.

Walsh’s only score came when Aaron Male (R-Fr., 5-11, Akron, OH/Ellet) capped off a 15-play, 65-yard drive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone to make the score 16-7 after Michael Dudic’s (Jr., 5-10, Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) PAT with 5:40 left in the third quarter. The touchdown put the Cavaliers back into the game, but Tech answered with a field goal on its next possession and followed it up with a touchdown after the Huskies recovered a Walsh fumble. The Cavs also had a drive to the Michigan Tech 37-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but the offensive momentum was halted by an interception.

Michigan Tech scored on its first two possessions to take a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Meanwhile the Cavs were forced to punt on their first four possessions.  Walsh’s defense stepped it up to force Tech into a turnover on downs, a punt, and an interception by Jamaris Brown (Jr., 5-9, Fort Meyers, FL/Lehigh) on its next three possessions before the Huskies closed out the first half with a field goal. It was Brown’s second interception of the season. C.J. Chatman (So., 5-9, Copley, OH/HS) led the defense with 10 tackles.

Paul Kempe (Jr., 6-1, Girard, OH/Ursuline) was 20-of-44 for 138 yards on the day. He hit four different receivers five times each with Matt Matuska (R-Fr., 6-0, Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) picking up the most yards with 43.

Walsh returns home to Fawcett Stadium to host Ferris State next week. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 95.9 WNPQ. Video will also be provided on TEAMLINE.
