9.22.12 VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Come Up Just Short at Grand Valley

Women's Volleyball, 2012-09-22

Walsh gave Grand Valley State University all it could handle Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough as the Cavs fell 25-23, 22-25, 26-28, 26-28. The Cavaliers (3-6, 1-3) led with the game point in the final two sets, but the Lakers (9-3, 2-2) came back in both instances.

After splitting the first two sets, the Maroon and Gold appeared to be in good position to take a 2-1 lead after a service ace by Hannah Duran (Sr., 5-9, Elyria, OH/Midview) put them up 24-18 in set three. However, the Lakers were able to reel off six-straight point to tie the game. The two teams then exchanged the next four points until Grand Valley finished the set with consecutive kills.

The fourth set saw the Cavs go down 24-20, but as the Lakers did previously, Walsh was able to score four consecutive points for the tie and then went up 25-24 after a block assist by Brittany Morris (Sr., 5-11, North Royalton, OH/Padua) and Duran. Grand Valley tied it up on the next play with a block. After both teams exchanged points, the Lakers won the match with a pair of kills.

Julianne O’Donnell (Sr., 5-10, Willowick, OH/Lake Catholic) paced the offense with 18 kills. Paige Chandler (Jr., 6-0, Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) also had a strong game with 15 kills. O’Donnell also led the defense with 16 digs. Morris  played well in the front as she recorded four blocks.

Walsh will attempt to rebound as they travel to take on rival Malone on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
