9.24.11 FOOTBALL: Safety Gives Cavs First Win, 22-20 at Urbana
(Urbana, OH) Walsh's (1-3) defense helped seal the Cavs' first win of the season, 22-20, at Urbana University (2-2) today. The Cavs' defense recorded a safety at the 8:58 mark of the fourth quarter which broke a 20-20 tie.
Walsh took a 10-0 first half lead as Bo Beegle (5-9, R-fr., Beloit, OH/West Branch) kicked a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter, which was followed by a 75-yard punt return by Tony Stover (6-2, So., Akron, OH/Northwest).
Urbana came back with two scores and led 13-10 with 8:39 to play in the first half. Walsh regained the lead at 17-13 when Cory Farcas (6-2, So., Hubbard, OH/HS) recovered a fumble by Urbana quarterback DJ Mendenhall and raced into the endzone from 13 yards out. Urbana then scored in the final 70 seconds of the half on a 84-yard drive and take a 20-17 lead into the locker room.
Walsh scored the only points in the second half and tied the game on a Beegle 22-yard field at the 9:31 mark of the third quarter. Walsh would take the lead in the fourth quarter when Brandon Mingo (5-9, Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) recorded the sack in the endzone to give Walsh a 22-20 lead with 8:58 to play.
The defense would hold the rest of the game, limiting Urbana to just 42 yards in the second half.
Toba Olarewaju (Jr., 5-10, 191, Youngstown, OH/Christian) led the Cavs with 71 yards rushing, with 51 coming in the second half.
