9.24.12 MEN'S TENNIS: Gable and Portelance Runners-Up in Raider Shootout

Walsh had eight players travel to Wright State University for the Raider Shootout over the weekend with five players moving on to at least the semi-finals in their respective tournament brackets. Jarred Gable (Sr., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) and Alex Portelance (Fr., Repentigny, Quebec/Felix-Leclerc) teamed up in the D doubles flight and finished runners-up. Carlos Jaque (Chijuayante, Concepcion, Chile/Lycee Charles de Gaulle) and Louis Thomas (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) also played in the same flight and advanced to the semifinals. Pablo Cabezon (Fr., Santander, Cantabria, Spain/Calasanz Collegue) played in the B singles flight and advanced to the semi-finals.

Gable and Portelance won their first match against a team from the University of Northwestern Ohio 9-7 before facing their own teammates Jaque and Thomas in the semis. Jaque and Thomas advanced to the semis after defeating Jeremy Mokry and Brandon Taylor from Ohio Dominican 8-2 before following up with an 8-6 win over Volodymyr Zverkovsky and Jacob Wendell from Eastern Illinois.

In the semis, Gable and Portelance took the battle of the Cavaliers 9-7 before falling to Chris Angulo and Andre Correa in the finals 8-1.

Cabezon advanced to semifinals by defeating Dayton’s eventual back draw winner Josh Malyon 6-1, 6-2 and Wright State’s Dan Hyman 7-6, 6-2. In the finals, Cabezon lost a close match to Wright State’s Myles Harris 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
