9.26.13 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Draw With Ohio Valley 1-1

(VIENNA, W.Va.) – Walsh traveled to the Mountain State and came away with a 1-1 draw against hosting Ohio Valley University of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Cavaliers are now 3-3-1 while the Fighting Scots are 1-3-3 on the year.
The Cavaliers struck first when Jessie Gearhart (So., 5-9, Wadsworth, OH/HS) scored after a corner kick by Lauren Jokovich (Sr., 5-4, Canton, OH/Jackson. The corner kick was sent to the far left post where Gearhart went up and headed it in to the back of the net in the 19th minute. It was Gearhart’s second goal of the season. The 1-0 lead held for the remainder of the half.
Ohio Valley eventually tied the game on an unassisted goal by Amanda Simpson who placed the ball in the same left corner on a hard shot from outside the top of the box in the 58th minute.
The 1-1 score was the eventual final score, but the Cavs had plenty of opportunities to punch in another goal. Walsh was very aggressive on the attack, but was either stopped by Ohio Valley’s goalie or called offsides. Overall, the Scots outshot the Cavs 18-15 overall, but Walsh held a 7-4 advantage on shots-on-goal. The Cavs were also called offsides 12 times while Ohio Valley was flagged once.
Michaella Stucky (So., 5-5, Medina, OH/HS) was strong in goal and made three saves when called upon on 18 shots faced. Gearhart led the attack with six shots for the offense. Four of them were on goal.
Walsh remains on the road for its next game when it travels to Lake Erie on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
