9.28.12 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Battle Even With Bulldogs 1-1

Women's Soccer, 2012-09-28

Walsh opened up the weekend with a 1-1 draw with visiting Ferris State on a chilly evening at Milazzo Field. The Cavaliers are now 5-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs battled to their third tie of the season and now stand 3-3-3 overall and are tied with Walsh in the conference standings.

The Bulldogs controlled the ball for most of the game and gave Walsh’s pair of goalies quite a workout for the 110-minute match. However,iIt was Lauren Jokovich (Jr., 5-4, Canton, OH/Jackson) that struck first as she took a shot from about 35 yards out and floated it over the Ferris State goalkeeper’s hands just under the crossbar to give Walsh a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. It was Jokovich's first goal of the season. It didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to answer as Nichole Boehnke headed in a ball that ricocheted off the crossbar on a previous shot in the 57thminute.

From there, both teams found opportunities on goal, but all three goalies made saves to keep the score tied at 1-1. Walsh was only able to get one shot on goal for each of the overtime periods. Molly Martin (Sr., 5-7, Canfield, OH/HS) had a good look in the first overtime while Kristen Conti (Fr., 5-8, Hartville, OH/Lake) took the other in the final minutes of the second overtime.

Taylor Stano (Massillon, OH/Jackson) received the start on goal and had a big game with nine saves on 17 shots faced in the first half and both overtime periods. Michaella Stucky (Fr., 5-5, Medina, OH/HS) played the second and made three saves on 11 shots faced.

The Cavaliers return to action and finish their four-game home stand this Sunday as they host No. 8 Grand Valley State University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
