9.6.13 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Jalbert's Hat Trick Leads Cavs to 4-0 Win
Women's Soccer, 2013-09-06
Early aggressiveness and a hat trick by Lea Jalbert (R-Fr., 5-5, Repentigny, Canada/Felix-Leclerc) propelled Walsh to a 4-0 win over visiting St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) in the season opener for both teams Thursday night. The Cavaliers were on the offensive end for the majority of the game and outshot the Spartans 20 to 5.
Despite being called offsides 14 times, including 11 times in the first half, it didn’t take the Cavs long to start the light up the scoreboard. Six minutes into the game, Jessie Gearhart (So., 5-9, Wadsworth, OH/HS) found Jalbert breaking towards the goal and gave her a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. Jalbert then kicked it to the left side of the goalie and into the back of the net for the quick 1-0 lead. Gearhart later scored in the 36th minute after Kristen Conti (So., 5-8, Hartville, OH/Lake) assisted her from the left side of the box.
In the second half, it was all Jalbert. She gave the Cavs a 3-0 lead in the 68th minute on an almost identical play on Gearhart’s goal. Emily Durina (So., 5-6, Youngstown, OH/Austintown Fitch) Jalbert completed the hat trick in the 72nd minute after the ball was bouncing around in the box and put it into the back of the net for the game’s final goal.
Michaella Stucky (So., 5-5, Medina, OH/HS) started in goal and shared the shutout with Dani Shambaugh (Fr., 5-7, Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley). Stucky faced four shots and made one save.
Walsh will be back in action when it entertains West Virginia Wesleyan College of the Mountain East Conference on Sunday at 1 p.m. It will be the first game of the season for the Lady Bobcats.
