9.8.13 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Jalbert's Late Goal Puts Cavs Past West Virginia Wesleyan
Women's Soccer, 2013-09-08
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh picked up a big non-conference win with a 1-0 victory over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan College in a mostly defensive game Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers are now 2-0 on the short season, while the Lady Bobcats of the Mountain East Conference were playing in their season opener.
Neither team could generate much on offense during the game, but West Virginia Wesleyan did hold a slight advantage in the first half and outshot Walsh 5-1. The second half was more balanced with the Cavs getting an edge early in the period. It wasn’t until the 79thminute when Walsh was able to put the ball in the back of the net on Lea Jalbert’s (R-Fr., 5-5, Repentigny, Canada/Felix-Leclerc) fourth goal of the season on the assist from Olivia Buttery (Sr., 5-4, Canton, OH/Jackson). Buttery was able to pass the ball past to Lady Bobcat defenders from the top of the box to a waiting Jalbert on the right who lobbed the ball over the goalie’s head to the left side of the net.
Michaella Stucky (So., 5-5, Medina, OH/HS) faced nine shots on the day and came up big when counted upon with four saves.
The Cavaliers also shut out St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) in the season opener on Friday. West Virginia Wesleyan was picked as the preseason favorites to win the MEC and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2012.
Walsh now turns its attention to arch rival Malone, who visits Milazzo Field on Thursday. The game is designated as a non-conference match and is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
