9.8.13 WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Defeat Ferris State in Close Contest

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh won a nail-biter against Ferris State with a 5-4 decision for its first win of the season. The Cavaliers end the weekend 1-2 both overall and in conference play. The Bulldogs (2-1, 2-1) suffered their first defeat of the season after picking up a forfeit win at Lake Erie Friday and defeating Malone yesterday.
The Cavaliers started the day strong with a pair of wins during the doubles portion of the contest. Sofya Logunova (Fr., Praha, Czech Republic) and Alona Skobkina (Fr., Tarragona, Spain) paired up to win at first doubles by an impressive 8-1 score. Alisha Angle (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Daria Bondareva (Fr., Sankt-Petersburg, Russia) also won at second doubles by a score of 8-4.
The Cavs kept the momentum going with three of the top four singles players recording wins to earn the team victory. Logunova won at first singles in a hard-fought contest 6-4, 6-3. Bondareva won at second singles 6-2, 6-2.
Ferris State was still able to pick up wins at third, fifth, and sixth singles, leaving it up to Angle to decide the match against the Bulldog’s Janie Sell. After splitting the first two sets 6-2 and 5-7, Angle brought home the victory with a 6-3 score in the third set as the last match going at the Klekotka Tennis Complex.
Walsh will play another three matches at home next weekend. The Cavs will start off with Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 2 p.m. Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech will visit on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
