Accounting

The increasingly dynamic global business environment has influenced the accounting profession and the accounting curriculum. Accounting professionals practice in a complex, technical, ethical, and analytical setting. The accounting curriculum at Walsh addresses these areas and prepares students entering the accounting profession to compete knowledgably and effectively in management or other private or non-for-profit sector positions. The accounting faculty believes that the best preparation they can provide for our students is in a curriculum that emphasizes management accounting skills and general business issues, while offering options to those students who would like to pursue professional certifications. The goal of the accounting curriculum is to produce graduates that are critical thinkers with superior communication and analytical skills grounded in a solid foundation in both the ethical and technical aspects of accounting and business issues. The Walsh curriculum satisfies all the specific course requirements that give students the foundation necessary to pursue both CPA (Certified Public Accountants) designation and the CMA (Certified Management Accountant).

Preparation for the CMA Examination The accounting curriculum satisfies all the content areas tested on the CMA examination. Upon completion of accounting major requirements, students are prepared to seek CMA certification with no additional course work.

The CMA exam is a rigorous, comprehensive four-part exam administered by the Institute of Certified Management Accountants, an arm of the Institute of Management Accountants (CMA). For more information contact the local chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants or access www.imanet.org.

Preparation for the CPA Examination The CPA exam is a rigorous four part professional exam administered by the each State's Board of Accountancy through the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Currently, in Ohio, a student wishing to take the CPA examination must either:

  • A baccalaureate degree including 150 semester hours (225 quarter hours) of college credit. In lieu of 150 semester hours, a baccalaureate or associates degree and a score of 1200 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination General Test.
  • 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in accounting (or 24 semester hours in accounting, excluding principles) with coverage in these 5 subject areas: auditing, financial accounting, management accounting, professional ethics, and taxation.
  • 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in business courses other than accounting courses. Economics and information systems count as business subjects.
  • Upon graduation from Walsh's accounting program, accounting majors will have completed 125 credit hours. To prepare students who wish to pursue the Uniform CPA Exam in the State of Ohio, the additional 25 credit hours of course work beyond these 125 credit hours is available. Because no additional accounting specific course work is required, those students who wish to take the CPA exam can earn these 25 additional credits through Walsh's MBA graduate work.
