Faculty & Staff > Helpful Hints for Advising time

First, some general information:

I see part of my responsibility as your advisor as helping you shape the “big picture” of your academic career.  For example, finding out what you want to do after graduation and how best to achieve that or discovering that you’ve changed your mind from last semester and need to revamp.  I think that the small picture of which classes you choose to take is more up to you.  So, I will definitely look over and evaluate your choices but PLEASE come prepared with them so we can focus on “bigger picture” issues as well.

Now, the practical part that you’re really looking for:

* Pay attention to when advising for registration takes place every semester.  I will send an e-mail to everyone reminding them it’s approaching but you’ll have to check which ever e-mail you have listed as your “preferred e-mail address” at the Cavalier Center to receive my reminder!

* Check my door (Betzler 137) for sign up times to discuss the classes for which you’d like to register.

* BEFORE YOU COME TO THAT APPOINTMENT look at the courses offered.  You can find the offerings at the Walsh website (go to “Academics”, then “Office of the Registrar”, then “Schedule of Classes.” Print this out if it’s easier for you to view.  Go over the class offerings and make up a schedule that suits your needs (i.e., takes into account your academic requirements, work schedule, athletic practices, desire to take a certain class, desire to not have an 8am class!) and BRING IT WITH YOU WHEN YOU COME TO YOUR APPOINTMENT.  It takes a while to organize your schedule and I’d rather you do it based on your preferences not mine.  So if you aren’t prepared we’ll have to reschedule.

* If you don’t know your academic requirements you can find them in your Undergraduate Catalogue (available on line) or on a checksheet that you should either already have or can get from me (before your advising appointment).

* By the way, you can also find your “registration time” on-line.  Those of you with more credits get to register first.   Those times are listed on the “Office of the Registrar” page.

I look forward to talking with all of your during advising.  Bring your schedules and more importantly any other concerns you have about your academic future.  Of course, you are also encouraged to stop in my office throughout the semester with whatever questions you may have.

I hope classes are going well this semester.  I’ll be talking to all of you soon.
