Assistant Coach Al CampbellHead Coach Al Campbell (492-426) begins his 14th year on staff at Walsh University.  After serving as head coach for the past 13 years, Al will serve as an assistant on staff of rob Mizicko in both cross country and track coach at  Walsh University. Campbell guided the Cavs to a third place finish at the AMC championships last year. The Cavs placed second under Campbell in the AMC meet in 2000.

Campbell’s career in education and athletics spans more than four decades. Al started his career as a physical education teacher and coach at Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1964 and remained there until 1968. In 1968, he began an association with the University of Akron that would last 31 years. Campbell served as head track and cross country coach from 1968 until 1995, the longest service of any coach at Akron.

Campbell coached the men for 27 years and the women for 11 years (1984-95). His teams captured three championships and produced numerous All-Americans, including Walsh’s Dan McCallion. Campbell’s overall coaching record in cross country (314-174) and track (132-59) are complimented by his being named North Star Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989. He was named the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Coach of the Year in 1984. In 1995, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Akron’s Dapper Dan Club. He is also a member of the Summit County and University of Akron Sports Hall of Fame.

Campbell served Walsh as an assistant coach in cross country and track in 1995 and 1996, before becoming head coach. He was an adjunct professor from 1995-1998 and teaches in the department of physical education.

Al and his wife Nancy are the proud parents of two children, Patrick and Lisa and three grandchildren, John Jr., Amy and Katelin. The Campbells reside in Massillon.
